Chris Martin Named League One Player of the Month

Bristol Rovers forward Chris Martin has been named Sky Bet League One Player of the Month for January.

He scored five goals in four matches for the Gas in January, including an inch-perfect glancing header away at Barnsley and an audacious finish against Blackpool at The Mem.

The 35-year-old fought off competition from forwards Dan Agyei (Leyton Orient) and James Collins (Derby County) as well as Bolton Wanderers midfielder Josh Sheehan.

Martin has enjoyed an excellent season in blue and white to date with 11 goals in 21 league matches including both goals in a 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic over the festive period.

On winning the award, Martin said: “I'm delighted to be named as Sky Bet League One Player of the Month.

“Of course, I'm really grateful to my teammates for supplying me with opportunities to score but I'm proud of this achievement.

“We would now like to marry that up with going on a good run as a team, pushing up the table, and seeing where we can end up at the end of the season.”

Boss Matt Taylor added: “He’s made a real impact. We were waiting for that contract to be signed in January so that was an important month to make sure we had him tied down.

"I want more service to him, more balls flashing across that box, more opportunities for him to improve his goal record, which is already quite impressive.

“He’s been a big player for us and we’ll welcome him back in a fresher capacity on Tuesday."
