Connor Taylor | We’re looking forward to Saturday

Connor Taylor

Connor Taylor stated that Bristol Rovers' Sky Bet League One match against Wycombe Wanderers cannot come quickly enough after losing 3-2 to Peterborough United last weekend.

The Gas started slowly and were 3-0 down heading into the latter stages of the contest after goals from Kwame Poku, Ricky-Jade Jones and Malik Mothersille.

Luke McCormick and Gatlin O'Donkor scored off the bench to give Rovers a chance of stealing a point heading into the final period. However, the Posh survived to claim all three points, condemning Matt Taylor's men to their third consecutive defeat.

Taylor believes his team have reacted well and are ready to put the game against the Posh behind them.

“The reaction has been good as always,” he said. “We’ve trained well. We’re just looking forward to Saturday now. It can’t come quickly enough to get that Peterborough game behind us.”

Rovers struggled to get going for the first hour against Peterborough before dominating in the last 20 minutes, ultimately coming close to completing a fantastic late comeback.

Taylor was pleased with their late display but insisted that the team focused on the poor start last weekend and worked on that part of their game.

“There’s two sides to it,” said the defender. “You can take confidence out of the last twenty or thirty minutes, as that’s how we can play. We can be a real threat and have a real intensity to our play.

“I think we’ve got to focus more on the first 60 minutes and about getting that right. We just didn’t really have a foothold in the game for too long.

“We’ve been working on making sure that we’re in the game for longer.”

Taylor came in for the suspended Taylor Moore last weekend to make his first League One start this season, previously coming off the bench in four of the first six games in the third tier.

He admits that he has had to be patient because of how Rovers started the new campaign but believes competition for places can only help the team.

“I feel good in myself,” he said. “I’ve had to be patient, and the lads started the season well. I was not naive enough to think that I was going to walk back into the team. It’s competition for places now, and you’ve got to make sure your performance levels are at a certain level to stay in the team.

"For everyone, competition for places is healthy and good mentally. You can never have a dull five minutes or training session; you’ve got to be nailed on all the time to make sure you stay in."
