Grant Ward | It was a tough night

Grant Ward

Grant Ward was disappointed after Bristol Rovers fell to a 3-0 defeat to Leyton Orient in Sky Bet League One.

The O’s raced into a three-goal lead before half-time to take control of the contest, with Dan Happe heading in the opener before strikes from Ollie O'Neil and Dan Agyei put the hosts in command.

The Gas struggled to get a foothold in the game and could not put Orient under pressure, losing on their travels for the first time since their 1-0 defeat to Reading towards the end of October.

Ward, who replaced the suspended Kamil Conteh in the midfield, admitted that Rovers were not good enough all over the pitch, adding that it came as a surprise after a positive result against Barnsley in the second round of the Emirates FA Cup.

“It was a tough night for us on all fronts, and all over the pitch we were dominated,” he said. “We hold our hands up to that.

“I thought coming into this, we had a decent run of form. We had a good result at the weekend and a decent FA Cup draw. I thought we would be more up for it, but I think we just got it wrong today all over the pitch.

“We didn’t battle enough, we didn’t get enough second balls, we didn’t look like a threat, and I think we had one shot. We just got completely dominated.”

Consistency has been hard to find for Rovers this campaign, with the Gas struggling to string together successive results despite plenty of positive performances.

The Pirates started November with a run of four games unbeaten, beating Mansfield Town 1-0 on their travels before their run ended with a 2-0 loss to Blackpool at The Memorial Stadium.

The Gas showed great spirit to battle through a tough FA Cup clash away against Barnsley but struggled to find the same levels against Orient, with Ward fully aware of the situation.

We didn’t battle enough, we didn’t get enough second balls, we didn’t look like a threat, and I think we had one shot.

"We’re not consistent enough, and we haven’t won two or three games in a row," said Ward. "We can’t really get that consistency at the minute."

Rovers will look to return to winning ways against Bolton Wanderers at home on Saturday. Ward apologised to the fans who travelled to Orient and insisted that the team are looking to put things right against the Trotters.

“We've got to hold our hands up to that, and hopefully, on Saturday, we can rectify it. All I can say is apologies to the travelling fans, and hopefully, we can put it right on Saturday.

They’ve paid their money to come down, so they are only right to give their opinion. We always clap them at the end of the game.

“I think it’ll be a good game for us against Bolton. We’ve got a tough December run coming up, so we need all the points we can get. We get back to Bristol today, have a rest tomorrow, and we go again.”
