James Wilson | Everyone really wants to be successful

James Wilson

James Wilson is delighted with the Bristol Rovers squad and believes everyone is pushing for a successful season.

The Gas held promotion favourites Rotherham United to a goalless draw at the AESESAL New York Stadium in Sky Bet League One and defended admirably to keep their second clean sheet of the season, previously beating Northampton Town 1-0 at The Memorial Stadium.

Wilson insisted that the Pirates have room for improvement but took positives from their draw against the Millers.

“I don’t think we played particularly well, but to come away with a clean sheet and a point today, we’ve got to take that,” said Wilson. “We’ve just said about foundations and starting like that, but we know we need to be better at the same time. We want to have attacking games as well as just waiting on teams to make mistakes.

“So, we’ve got loads to work on, but it’s definitely a positive.”

Rovers have been busy in the transfer window and have made fourteen new additions, significantly bolstering the defence with the signings of Clinton Mola, Taylor Moore, Bryant Bilongo and goalkeeper Josh Griffiths.

Wilson has retained his place in a summer of overhauls and is the most experienced member of the backline. The centre-back stated that the early additions helped settle the side and has been impressed with the young players who have come in.

“A lot of signings were made early in pre-season, which I think helps,” he said. “You get a good time together. So, there’s still loads to work on. Even defensively today, we got away with a couple, which you’re going to get in games, but loads to work on and loads of positives as well.

“I’ve always just tried to play my game, and hopefully that can help the others out. But I’m not really one for shouting and screaming at people.

“I think the young lads have done great; I think Bryant [Bilongo], for example, has never played a league game and to play the last two league games, he’s really impressed me.

“I think he’s impressed everyone, but the same as a few of them. So, lots of positives.”

It’s been a busy opening month for the Gas, who still have a Bristol Street Motors Trophy match against Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s before games against Stockport County and Cambridge United in League One.

Wilson is optimistic about the campaign and believes everyone has a desire to be successful.

“We’ve got a good group, the young lads; we’ve got a good mix,” said the defender. “Everyone really wants to be successful. I think we’re obviously not there yet, but everyone wants to be, so I think that’s the main thing. Everyone’s together.
