James Wilson | Northampton defeat frustrating

James Wilson

James Wilson was frustrated after Bristol Rovers lost 2-1 to Northampton Town in Sky Bet League One.

The Gas looked to be heading towards a first win on the road since the start of January when Scott Sinclair broke the deadlock moments into the first half with a low finish into the bottom corner. However, the Cobblers battled back to collect their third victory in four outings to ease any immediate relegation worries.

Dara Costelloe netted the equaliser just after the hour mark before Nesta Guinness-Walker scored the winner with his first touch off the bench, completing the comeback from the hosts to push them above the Pirates in the table.

Wilson was disappointed after the defeat and admitted the goals they conceded came as a result of their mistakes.

“It’s just so frustrating,” said the defender. “We didn’t deserve to win, I don’t think. We were second to every single second ball. We were not strong enough in tackles. It was a really disappointing display.

“I know we could have gone 2-0 up, and it would have been a different game, but we’ve got to do so much better in the middle of the pitch.

“The first half was the same. We weren't winning enough tackles. We weren't winning enough fifty-fifties. So, I think it was coming in the end. They still didn’t create anything particularly. It was our mistakes that cost the goals. It’s so frustrating.”

The Gas looked like they had turned a corner after collecting two wins and a draw in three outings at The Memorial Stadium to go seven points clear of the relegation zone, but back-to-back away defeats have dealt Rovers a serious blow.

Winless away from home since beating Cambridge United in January, Wilson struggled to pinpoint the reason for their struggles away from home.

“I can’t really put my finger on it,” he said. “It’s about being on the same page. Quite clearly, when we come away from home, we’re not on the same page. It must be so frustrating to watch us because at home. We’re doing the right things, and look like we’re enjoying our football. But away from home, we’re the complete opposite. It must be really frustrating for everyone.

“We’ve got a whole week now. It's been a tough couple of weeks. It started well, and it’s ended really badly. We need to get our heads together and try to figure out what we can work on for the next home game.”

The Gas will welcome Rotherham United to The Memorial Stadium on Saturday and will play at home in three of their next four matches. Wilson emphasised the importance of the upcoming games and confessed his side must collect positive results as quickly as possible.

“We have to now,” said the centre-back. “We’re in a position where we need to pick up points. It doesn’t really matter when, but we need to start doing it as soon as we can. I think there’s 14 games left now. We’re going to need at least half of them to be wins. We need to really get going.”
