Kamil Conteh is looking forward to representing Sierra Leone in the upcoming international break in September.

The midfielder has been capped for his nation nine times, debuting in March 2022 against Togo.

It is an important period for Sierra Leone as they play Chad and Zambia in their first two qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations. They did not qualify for the 2023 edition of the competition in Côte d'Ivoire.

Conteh is hoping that he gets time on the pitch to show his skills and stated that the main aim for his nation is to qualify.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “It’s always an honour to play for them. My family here and back home are proud. If I get minutes, I will show what I can do. We have qualifiers, so the aim is to qualify for the AFCON.”

Conteh has been an important part of the Gas’ team in Sky Bet League One this season and has not missed a minute. The Pirates have collected two wins, one draw and one defeat so far, with the midfielder hoping to watch his side when he is away and believes they will continue to do well without him.

“We’re playing on the Friday, and on the Saturday, I think I’ll be travelling, but I will keep up to date with the result," said Conteh. "If I can watch it I will, but most of the time, I will keep flicking through to see that we’re winning!

“I back the boys. It’s not like I’m injured or anything, I’m just going away for a bit. But yeah, I back the boys to win next week so I’m looking forward to it.”

Reflecting on Rovers' 2-0 win over Cambridge United on Saturday, Conteh was pleased for close friend Promise Omochere, who netted his first two competitive goals for the Gas either side of half-time.

“It was a good win,” he said. “This week, we were working a lot on the attacking stuff in front of the goal and taking our chances.

“Promise [Omochere] took his chances well. We could’ve got more, but we’ll take the win.

“He’s been working on finishing his training. All the hard work that he’s put in has come to light. So, for him now, it’s about building on it, continuing into the next game and keep working.”
