Bristol Rovers v Exeter City
Sky Bet League One, The Memorial Stadium, Saturday 12 April, 3:00pm KO

Bristol Rovers will look to return to winning ways in Sky Bet League One when they welcome Exeter City to The Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

The Gas have lost their last five games in the third tier and are only three points above the relegation zone heading into the final five fixtures of the campaign, but will gain some confidence from their recent performances.

Rovers created the better chances against league leaders Birmingham City before falling to a late 2-1 defeat at home before narrowly losing to Bolton Wanderers on their travels in their last outing.

Exeter drew 1-1 with Wigan Athletic in their previous fixture, with Reece Cole's second-half equaliser earning the Grecians a point after Dale Taylor's opener.

Opposition...

Exeter City spent ten successive seasons in League Two before gaining promotion to the third tier in the 2021-22 campaign and have stayed well away from relegation in both campaigns since coming up.

Finishing in fourteenth and thirteenth place in the last two terms, Gary Caldwell’s men have plenty to do if they want to make another step forward and end the season in the top half. They are five points below Rotherham United, who sit in the middle of the table, with the Grecians also wary that they are not completely clear of the teams battling for survival below them.

Exeter are ten points clear of Burton Albion, but with the Brewers holding a game in hand, the Grecians still have work to do to ensure survival. They have only won one of their previous six and have some big games against teams below them, with fixtures against Burton and Crawley following their trip to the Gas.

Previous Meetings...

Rovers have already played Exeter twice this season, losing 3-2 at The Mem in the Vertu Trophy before a 3-1 loss at St James Park on Boxing Day League One. Iñigo Calderón was watching from the stands after being appointed as Rovers’ head coach earlier that day and would have been pleased when Promise Omochere gave Rovers the lead just past the hour mark. However, goals from Jack Fitzwater, Millenic Alli and Jake Richards helped the Grecians come from behind to claim all three points.

Overall, the Pirates have struggled against Exeter. The Gas have only won one of their last ten fixtures against their upcoming opponents, with Brandon Aguilera netting the only goal in a 1-0 away win in February 2024. Rovers’ previous home triumph came in 2016, with Billy Bodin, Lee Brown and Matty Taylor scoring in a 3-1 victory.
