Match Preview | Bristol Rovers v Wigan Athletic

Bristol Rovers team

Bristol Rovers will attempt to collect their third successive win at The Memorial Stadium in Sky Bet League One when they host Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

The Gas lost 2-1 to Barnsley at Oakwell last weekend, with Adam Phillips' powerful second-half header helping the Tykes to all three points after Ruel Sotiriou's first goal for the Pirates cancelled out Davis Keillor-Dunn's early opener.

However, Matt Taylor's men have been strong at home in the third tier, beating Northampton Town on the first day of the campaign before a victory over Cambridge United.

As for Wigan, their home match against Stevenage was postponed last weekend, previously losing to promotion favourites Birmingham City 2-1.

Opposition...

Wigan are playing in League One after being relegated from the Championship in the 2022/23 campaign. The Latics were deducted eight points before the start of the previous term and finished in twelfth position.

Shaun Maloney’s men have played four games in the third tier this season, winning one and losing three matches. Their only triumph was a 1-0 win over Crawley Town at the Brick Community Stadium.

Wigan have been busy in the loan market and have added six players from Premier League sides. Noticeable additions include Calvin Ramsay and Luke Chambers from Liverpool, Michael Olakigbe from Brentford and Joe Hugill from Manchester United.

Will Aimson has played all four games since joining from Exeter City in the summer, as well as Dion Rankine, who moved from Chelsea.

Previous Meetings...

Wigan have got the better of the Gas in previous meetings, only losing once in the last 11 matches. Rovers’ previous victory against the Latics came at The Memorial Stadium last season, with Luke Thomas, Jack Hunt, Aaron Collins and John Maquis all scoring in a 4-1 victory.

The Gas last beat Wigan away from home when they played at Springfield Park in April 1990, coming away with a 2-1 triumph.
