Matt Taylor | It was a dominant display

Matt Taylor reacts to Cambridge win

Matt Taylor thought Bristol Rovers were dominant in their 2-0 win over Cambridge United in Sky Bet League One.

Promise Omochere scored either side of half-time to secure the Gas’ second league win this campaign, with both coming at The Memorial Stadium.

Rovers have now kept three clean sheets in their four outings in the third tier and have collected seven points.

Taylor was pleased with the display, happy for Omochere after his goal and praised Jake Garrett.

It was a dominant display

"I thought we deserved to win the game," said Taylor. "I thought it was a dominant display, I would’ve liked to go further ahead because you never know what will happen in the last ten or fifteen minutes of the game.

"But that’s the best we’ve been with the ball. I thought we looked freer in our attacking moments, maybe the space on the pitch suited us. Also a few partnerships and a few performances from individuals coming to the fore."

Happy for Promise Omochere

"I am happy for him because it was a big signing," he said. "He’s a centre forward, everyone is waiting for him to get off the mark and get up and running, but he does give the team an awful lot without putting the ball in the back of the net.

"So, I never want that to be his biggest marker, but I know the external world will make it that way, because all centre forwards live in that world.

"Great for him to get off the mark. That goal probably settled him and a few others down a little bit. You could just see us being more comfortable with our attacking play and great to get a second goal early in the second half."

Jake Garrett was outstanding

"He’s a young lad that’s come on loan to us from a Championship club," he said.

"I know Promise will get the headlines with the goal, but I thought Jake was outstanding today. I think once he started to get a foothold and control of the game himself in midfield, he started to show a little bit of his personality.

Matt Taylor

"He’s a Scouse lad who's got a little bit of swagger about him and a pitch presence and personality, but he can handle the ball as well.

"He’s a receiver of the ball and manipulator of the ball, and Ward is a runner. I thought that partnership with Kamil [Conteh] behind complemented each other well."

We’ve got a good foundation

"The defence was the biggest problem we had to fix," said the boss. "We’ve not fixed it by the way because we’re only three or four games in; I think only Cheltenham Town had a worse defensive record than us last season and we finished mid-table. That’s an incredible stat.

"We have to be better defensively; we’ve got a good foundation and a good base at the moment.

"We’ve certainly got a solid base to build from and I want that to continue."
