Rovers fight back to beat Burton

Match report | Burton

Bristol Rovers collected their first away win of the season after coming from behind to beat Burton Albion 3-1 in Sky Bet League One.

The Brewers took the lead in the first half when Danilo Orsi made capitalised on a defensive mistake between Clinton Mola and Josh Griffiths before shooting beyond Max Crocombe.

The Gas reacted brilliantly after the break and levelled through a pair of substitutes. Grant Ward played a pass across to Shaq Forde, who curled a fantastic strike past the goalkeeper for his first goal for the Club.

Ward then was at the heart of the action again to help the Pirates gain the lead, lifting a cross over Mola, who blasted his strike into the net.

Terence Vancooten was then shown a red card in the final stages after a bad tackle on Gatlin O’Donkor, who was racing towards the goal, with Rovers adding a third goal through Ward in the final stages.

Matt Taylor named the same Rovers side that beat Charlton on Tuesday night, with his side encouraged by many Gasheads in the away end.

The visitors started quickly and had an early chance when the ball dropped to Scott Sinclair in the middle of the box. The captain was searching for his third goal in as many games, but his shot was saved by Max Crocombe.

Charlie Webster then tested Griffiths with a low effort from the edge of the box before the Brewers took the lead.

Danilo Orsi made the most of a defensive mishap between Clinton Mola and Griffiths before slotting his shot past the goalkeeper from close range.

The Gas attempted to respond immediately to falling behind, with Bryant Bilongo showing plenty of energy down the left. He battled to the byline and cut the ball across to Ruel Sotiriou, but his close-range effort was blocked.

The Brewers started the day without a victory in the league. However, the hosts were showing no signs of a lack of confidence. Nick Akoto sent a clever pass down the right side of the box to Elliot Watt, who raced into the space before driving a low strike straight at Griffiths.

Taylor was looking for a reaction in the second half and brought on Ward and Forde soon after the restart, with the pair combining for the equaliser.

Ward had the ball on the outskirts of the area and rolled a pass across to Forde, who whipped his left-footed strike past the goalkeeper.

Rovers had all the momentum and took the lead quickly after. Ward got his second assist, clipping a cross over to Mola, who fired a powerful strike into the net.

Burton were looking to react and went close to levelling the score when Webster drilled his shot from the right side of the box across the goal and just wide of the post.

Taylor Moore was back in the squad after returning from suspension and was part of Rovers' defence effort to keep the lead. Romelle Donvon's cross was flicked on target by Ronnie Stutter, but Griffiths caught it well before denying Tomas Kalinauskas.

However, Burton then went down to ten men in the latter stages after Vancooten was shown a red card for a tackle on Gatlin O’Donkor, who was rushing towards the goal with possession.

O’Donkor then assisted Rovers’ third goal in the final stages to complete the win, playing it across to Ward, who finished with composure.
