Bristol Rovers U18s progressed to the second round of the FA Youth Cup with a 3-1 victory after extra time against Badshot Lea.
The Gas went into an early lead after some hesitancy among the Badshot backline enabled Trey Cadette to roll into an empty net. Kian Hill squandered an opportunity to double the advantage, with Will Lott saving his penalty, allowing the visitors to punish his missed chance in the second half.
Harry Greenwood forced the tie into extra-time with a spot-kick before Cadette netted the third penalty of the contest to give Rovers the lead again.
Woody Cole then came off the bench to add a third for the hosts, replicating the scoreline of the Gas' 3-1 win over Weston-super-Mare in the Emirates FA Cup just three days prior.
Cadette, in particular, found some early joy for the hosts down the left-hand side, cutting inside on multiple occasions to good effect. His hard work was rewarded 16 minutes into the game, as he pouched on a mistake by Badshot keeper Lott to pass into an empty net.
Rovers had the opportunity to make it two in just five minutes later after Hill was brought down after a mazy run into the box, with referee Craig Scriven giving a penalty. Lott made amends for his earlier error, however, diving smartly down to his right to deny Hill from the spot.
Badshot found some impetus hereafter, and following some loose play in Rovers' half, Ben Thompson wasted a good opportunity for the guests, lashing over from distance. Just four minutes before the break, Jaydon Bishop was forced into his most significant save of the half, tipping over a Luke Jarvie free kick from 25 yards out.
The next 45 minutes began in a similar vein, as Rovers struggled in their quest for a second. A cagey restart presented Badshot with the share of the early chances, with Oliver Bennett going close for the away side.
The pressure finally told with fewer than ten minutes of normal time remaining. A late challenge from Rovers keeper Bishop felled Thompson and gave Scriven no choice but to award his second penalty of the match.
Greenwood, his influence on the game growing by the minute, made no mistake from 12 yards, calmly slotting away to make it all square. Neither side could find a late winner, meaning 30 more minutes were required to separate the two teams.
Captain Charlie Moody got extra time off to an ideal start, stealing the ball back high up the pitch and slaloming his way into the box before becoming the third player to win a spot-kick after being on the end of a mistimed challenge. Cadette took responsibility and grabbed his second of the game, sending Lott the wrong way to put the Gas back into the ascendancy.
And while Badshot applied some late pressure in their quest for an equaliser, Rovers would soon put the tie beyond doubt.
A brilliant counter-attack, led by the industrious Excel Iwhiwu, saw fellow substitute Cole make it 3-1, showing great composure to fire beneath Lott, sending Rovers into the second round of the FA Youth Cup.
