Youthful Rovers beaten by Robins

Bristol Rovers full-time

Bristol Rovers exited the Gloucestershire FA Senior Challenge Cup after a 3-1 loss to Bristol City.

The Robins took an early lead through Omar Taylor-Clarke, who drilled his strike into the bottom corner before the hosts doubled their lead through substitute Brandon Bak just after half-time.

Kian Hall got one back for the Gas with a brilliant effort into the top-right corner, but City regained their two-goal moments later, with Kai Churchley lobbing his shot over Matt Hall.

Rovers pushed for a second goal that would make for an exciting ending, but the Robins held strong to take the win.

City enjoyed most of the early possession and used their height and strength to their advantage before taking the lead through Taylor-Clarke. The forward raced onto a clever pass down the right side of the box before drilling his strike across the goal and into the bottom corner.

The Robins gained momentum and went close to scoring again after brilliant pressing from Olly Thomas. It looked like the forward had won the ball from Matt Hall, but the forward recovered well to win a goal-kick.

Rovers were battling to get a foothold in the game and kept looking for Micah Anthony down the left, with the winger attempting to race at his marker at every opportunity to bring his team forward. He held it up well, swivelling onto his left foot before curling an inviting cross into the box, but the Robins defence headed clear.

The Gas were having most of their luck down that side and challenged Joe Duncan for the first time before the half-hour mark. Charlie White pulled a low ball across the area to Will Turner, who blasted his close-range shot at Joe Duncan.

Thomas looked sharp up front for the hosts, constantly looking to run through on goal. He latched onto a pass down the right and rushed forward, but Max Edwards matched his run to put in a sliding block.

The visitors had the final opportunity of the half, with Anthony dropping the ball off to Jerry Lawrence, but the goalkeeper pushed away his strike from a distance.

The Robins came out quickly in the second half and doubled their lead two minutes after the restart. Bak came off the bench at half-time and immediately made an impact, powering his close-range strike past Hall.

The substitute almost added his second soon after, getting on the end of a low cross from the left before directing his first-time shot off target.

Anthony continued to persist on the left for the Gas to get his side back in the contest. He collected a deep cross from the left, working the ball onto his right foot before lashing over.

He was causing plenty of problems and showed great skill, slotting a first-time pass through to the onrushing Charlie White. The left-back ran forward before looping his effort from a wide angle just off target.

Rovers were pushing for a goal back and found one through Hill, who blasted his effort from range into the top-right corner, but the Robins restored their two-goal lead moments later.

Churchley rushed up the other and looped his shot over Hall and into the net.

The Gas responded well to the setback and looked to get a second goal in the closing stages, but the Robins defended well to see out the victory.
