Player Biography

Grant Ward joined Bristol Rovers in January 2023 following his release from Blackpool.

Born in Lewisham, Ward moved to Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in 2011, playing for their academy before his first loan move out to MLS side Chicago Fire in March 2014.

However, the midfielder had to wait until May to make his professional debut after suffering a metatarsal injury. He eventually made his first appearance off the bench against Columbus Crew in a 2-0 defeat.

Ward went on to be a key player in the side, only missing one league match for the remainder of the campaign as the Fire ended second from bottom in the Eastern Conference.

On his return to English football, Ward went on loan moves to Coventry City and Rotherham United before permanently switching to then-Championship outfit Ipswich Town for an undisclosed fee from Spurs in 2016.

The 28-year-old made a perfect start to life at the Tractor Boys, netting a hat-trick in a 4-2 win over Barnsley. Ward played 43 of their 46 Championship matches in the 2016/17 campaign, contributing six goals and three assists as Ipswich finished in sixteenth position.

The midfielder continued to play a key role for the side before rupturing his cruciate knee ligament in a Boxing Day match against Queens Park Rangers. It was his final appearance for the club and was released at the end of the campaign.

Ward moved to Blackpool on a free transfer in December 2019 and was handed an 18-month contract with an option of a further year, with that option activated after becoming a regular figure for the Sky Bet League One side. However, he ruptured his Achilles tendon against Bournemouth in August 2021 and was out for a lengthy period.

After initially being released at the end of the season, he signed a three-month contract with the Seasiders in October 2022 but left the club when it expired.

Ward then joined Bristol Rovers on 27 January 2023, only six days after leaving Blackpool. He played in all 20 of the Gas' remaining games that season, netting his first goal in a 2-1 win over Fleetwood Town.

He then had another injury-hit season in the previous campaign, only making 23 appearances across all competitions.
